In today's post-covid digital era, remote work has become the new normal for many organizations including many companies being completely founded in 100% remote settings. Managing remote teams can be challenging and a major change in comparison to an in-office setting. With the right strategies, working on a remote team can be incredibly rewarding, make an impact to the bottom line, and provide the same levels of collaboration and productivity. Here are some effective ways to ensure your remote team stays productive, engaged, and connected:

1. Communication is Key

One of the biggest challenges in remote work is maintaining clear and consistent communication. This is a challenge even in an office setting, but even more amplified in a remote workforce. Utilize a variety of communication tools like Slack, Teams, or Zoom to keep everyone in the loop. Leverage regular check-ins (preferably bi-weekly or weekly) and create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns, both in a group setting like team meetings, as well in 1:1s. Always keep the door open for feedback and ideas, even make it a regular cadence in your team meetings. Over communication is always best, especially in a remote setting, and feedback is a gift!!!

2. Set Clear Expectations

Ensure that all team members are aware of their roles, responsibilities, and deadlines (obviously), but it’s even more critical in a remote workplace, so do it often!!!. Clearly defined goals and expectations help in maintaining accountability and ensuring everyone is on the same page. Regularly update the team on goal achievement. Share progress on the team’s goals- the good, the bad & the ugly! Be transparent about your personal goal achievement. Transparency & humility will always go a long way with your team.  Use project management tools like Asana, Jira, HCM solutions or self-made dashboards to keep track of goals & tasks. Ensure that everyone has access to it, and regularly discuss where you and the team are at.
